Proton beam therapy is an advanced form of radiation therapy used in cancer treatment. It is available at ten operating U.S. centers with several additional facilities in the planning and construction phase. Unlike standard (X-ray) radiation treatment, proton therapy uses high-speed particles that can be more precisely conformed to target the. The facility allows for realistic simulation of the space proton spectra in the energy range from 6 MeV up to MeV with exposure fluxes ranging from very low up to as high as p/cm2/sec. For proton gantries a use factor must be assigned for each gantry angle (U θ) appropriate to the patient population. This is the same concept as for conventional x-ray therapy, except that some proton facilities have gantries with restricted rotation (° or °) or fixed beam rooms with horizontal and/or vertical or inclined beam lines.
